Pierre Rosenberg
Member of the Académie Française and Honorary President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, Pierre Rosenberg is a specialist in French and Italian painting and drawing of the 17th and 18th centuries. He is one of the leading specialists on Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), to whom he has dedicated several publications.
In 1979, Pierre Rosenberg organized a major retrospective of Chardin’s work at the Grand Palais. Basket of Strawberries was placed on the cover of the catalog. The painting took center stage: “Chardin has surpassed himself here. The boldness of the white and red harmony, both audacious and refined, makes the work unforgettable. Chardin, avoiding flash and flare, with an ease and assurance unrivalled in his century, creates, with disconcerting and apparent effortlessness, one of his finest still lifes.” (Excerpt from the exhibition catalog)
